Spotlight: WEBTOON

An Alternative Source for Digital Comics

There are plenty of websites and apps out there to pass the time. You can read anything of interest that you want, be it your favorite magazine or newspaper, books, recipes, or comic books. My favorite one right now is WEBTOON.

WEBTOON is a website and app for creative writers and artists to publish their stories and share them with the world. The content is always free to the reader but there are ways to support the creators if you want to. Many of them have Patreon accounts and would the love the support.

The quality of content on WEBTOON is amazing. Every story I’ve read has been enthralling and the art is beautiful. There is something for everyone. Genres range from drama to sci-fi to romance or fantasy. There are comedies and thrillers, action and slice of life, short reads and long reads. Content is released weekly or at the creators discretion. While you’re not forced into a subscription there is a pay for content feature which allows you to access content earlier than the release schedule for some titles.

What I love about it is how I can jump from story to story. Often the suggestions provided by the WEBTOON staff have led me to some of my favorite stories. The convenience of having the app on my phone allows me to browse for new stories any time I’m bored. It’s been a pleasure to explore all different types of stories from independent creators. I can easily spend hours getting sucked in to new worlds.

To highlight just a few of my favorites:

Siren’s Lament by instantmiso, is about a love story and a mermaid’s curse. This one is complete so no worrying about catching up to the update schedule. There’s also musical background for almost every chapter to set the tone.

The long running and very popular Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe is a modern twist of the tale of Hades and Persephone. The art is vibrant and the story is captivating. There’s a reason why it’s on of the top series every week.

Omniscient Reader written by sing N song with art by Sleepy-C weaves a thrilling action story of an apocalyptic world where one man holds the secrets of what’s going to happen next, because he’s already read it.

Unholy Blood by Lina Im and Jeonghyeon Kim is a vampire tale with a twist. Updates are Mondays and Thursdays which makes waiting for new content so much easier!

Nothing Special by Katie Cook is a whimsical story that follows Callie and Declan through a fairy tale land. The art is fun and there are so many details packed into every scene.

Muted by Miranda Mundt just finished up it’s second season. This story follows Camille as she navigates expectations place upon her in a family of witches and the secrets they hold.

I could list hundreds of stories to read. There are a plethora of great stories to be discovered on WEBTOON. If you enjoy reading digital comics and are looking for fresh and exciting stories, I can’t recommend the app enough. Try it out and send me recommendations of your favorites stories!
