Review of “The Faraway Future”
WARNING: Spoilers for Black Clover Episode 170, “The Faraway Future”
We are finally here. The final episode of Black Clover. What a journey this has been! If you’ve been following along with my weekly reviews, you’ll find not single one of my predictions came true. As I’ve said before, it’s more fun to wildly speculate.
It’s a bittersweet end. Black Clover has become a constant in my life. With no breaks I could always look forward to a new episode. While I am satisfied with how everything ended it is sad that we must wait, who knows how long, to watch how the Spade Arc truly ends.
A Beautiful Ending
“The Faraway Future” is truly worthy of an ending. While this is not the end of Asta’s journey it was a wonderful representation of the person he has become. This is culminated midway through his fight with Liebe. All those sit-ups and push-ups really came through for him in his battle of strength. We see call backs to those Asta learned valuable lessons from: Kaito, Fanzel, Mars, Licht, and Yami. He becomes a blur of motion, dancing through the blades and returning blows with the skill of a master.
What’s really powerful about this moment is the choice to use “Haruka Mirai” by Kankaku Piero, the original opening. Sure it’s a predictable move at the end of an anime, but it’s still satisfying to hear. When Asta is at his peak in strength and resolve, that familiar rift starts bringing everything full circle. Really that’s what this whole episode highlighted. Two kids, with no magic, who each became strong in their own way and then were brought together by fate. In an unsurprising move, this is further cemented by Asta decision to form a bond of equals rather than a binding contract.
Answers Revealed
After little over three years we finally know where Asta came from. While we can guess as to why Licita gave up Asta, there is still a lingering question of how could she even have a child. Really think about it, if her magic sucks the life force of those around it how could she have a baby?
Let’s suspend our disbelief though and appreciate the brief glimpse we had of the type of mother she was. It’s clear she loved Liebe as her own. Thanks to her, Liebe found a home and grew to be a person who could be sad for others. After everything that happened to both Liebe and Asta, it is destiny that these two met. I believe they will be great friends and will become an unstoppable duo. The two sons of Licita.
Big Announcement
Now while the anime has finished, it was announced that there will be a Black Clover movie. There are no details as to what it is about or when it will be released. Given that the news coincides with the end of the anime, it’s likely the movie will continue where it left off. At least I’m sure that’s what we are all hoping for. Fingers cross but we will just have to wait and see!
Until then!
